2011 is a great milestone in the history of the Michigan Safety Conference, as it is the 81st anniversary of the event. With all of these years under our belt, one point still remains high on the totem pole for anyone in the State of Michigan and that is SAFETY. We all feel that safety is a very important ingredient in any company, in order to be successful and prosperous. Safety is such an important segment of our daily lives that we have designated this year to feature support for “Workplace Health and Safety”.
The Michigan Safety Conference is made up of volunteers from companies in the state of Michigan. We work together as a team, year- round, planning and putting into place the many valuable programs that help us in all endeavors of working safely in our own companies. We have divisions that plan and execute the great seminars and it is my pleasure to list them for you: Chemical, Construction, Emergency Management, Environmental Management, Fire Safety, Health Care, Industrial (including Metal Fabricating), Industrial Hygiene, Insurance, Public Employer, Public Utilities, Security, Consultation Education and Training (MIOSHA), and Transportation Divisions. As you can see we have a wealth of groups that provide the most up-to-date training for all in the safety fields, as well as those that just want to start learning about safety and the impacts it has on every day activities in the workplace. All of the programming is provided by experts in their fields, as well as those that work in the various Health and Safety disciplines throughout the State. All of the programming provides CEU’s for the professionals that requires continuing education credit.
One very important factor that has been paramount to help promote the safety profession is to provide scholarships on an annual basis for students that are enrolled in a Health and Safety curriculum. In the past 20 plus years we have given out more than $230,000 in college scholarships. As a result of our commitment to students, we now have a student volunteer committee for the Michigan Safety Conference. This past year we had over 30 college student volunteers working at registration, providing documentation of CEU’s, as well as just being available to provide any assistance needed to help make the conference successful. We think this is great, because these students are the leaders of tomorrow and we will certainly see them as the future leaders of future Michigan Safety Conferences. They will also become safety leaders in the many companies here in the State of Michigan.
We face many challenges today, with the economy being very tight and companies trying to streamline every part of their business. The Michigan Safety Conference, with the help of the participants like you, will continue to take a leadership role to help maintain Health and Safety in the work environment for all companies in the State. With a streamlined workforce, Health and Safety becomes a big factor for having a profitable bottom line. If the work environment is safe, and the ultimate goal of zero accidents prevails, then we will have a full work force with no interruptions because of injury which results in full productivity every single day. The bonus: Less cost to each company and more productivity and therefore an enhanced bottom line. So, yes, SAFETY does have an impact. Remember this is the year to support “Workplace Health and Safety.”
We are looking forward to seeing each and every Safety Professional as well as members of Safety Committees, and any employee that wants to enhance their safety knowledge at the 2011 Michigan Safety Conference.
